Adventures in Creative Thinking

How often have you said that a problem has no other solution and leads to a dead end? How often have you been stumped by a problem you can’t solve? Leadless. Unavoidable. Unsolvable.

Did you feel like you had explored all possibilities but still faced the mountain—large, unconquerable, and impregnable? You may feel like you’re hitting a steel mountain when facing such massive issues. Solving such a challenge may be stressful.

Joy! Possibly!

Creative problem-solving may help you see your issue differently. That light may be the end of the tunnel to solutions.

Creative problem-solving requires you to be open to multiple solutions. You must also be open to the possibility of solving seemingly intractable situations.

With this hopeful outlook, we can be more innovative in problem-solving.

First, maybe we haven’t properly looked at the problem, thus we can’t address it. Solving this problem requires understanding it and its workings. Knowing how it works and the problem helps you solve it.

Not defining the issue. Identify the participants and their links. Note your gains and losses from the current issue. The issue is now clear.

Second, write out all the limitations and assumptions you have for the problem. Assumptions can block solutions. Identify which assumptions are valid and which need to be addressed.

Third, break it down. From general to specific, solve it. Top-down strategy. Write the inquiry and their one-sentence answer. A generic solution should solve the issue. From here, you can develop and complicate the answer.

Number four: While critical thinking helps solve problems, you must also have a creative, analytical voice in your head. Try to figure out how to implement a proposed solution. Create. Find that solution’s weaknesses.

Fifth, there may be multiple solutions under development. Track all solutions and developments. Remember, there may be multiple solutions.

Sixth, “two heads are better than one.” That’s accurate. Be open-minded. Listening to everyone’s thoughts can only help. Especially if the individual you’re talking to has solved comparable challenges.

Solving the problem doesn’t require a gung-ho, lone hero. It’s best to organize subject-related cognition.

Seven: be patient. Perseverance may yield a solution. Remember that no one first invented anything.

Creative problem-solving can be aided through creative thinking exercises.

Example

Write any word in the middle of a piece of paper. Look at that word and write the first two words you think of. Continue until you get a word tree. This strengthens creativity and analogical skills.

Next time you encounter a problem you can’t fix, reconsider. It may be obvious. It only requires innovative thought, strategy, and hard effort.
